Where do you usually find inspiration when you start envisioning the concept of a new project?
MJ: There is no specific rule to finding inspiration. Ideas come and go in the most unexpected manner. Possibly my inspiration comes from a blend of memories and experiences, such as something I saw as a child, or learned at school, or experienced on a journey, or tasted in a restaurant, etc. Important is the process itself, how to allow these “inspirations” to exit our minds and how to allow them to manifest in the real world. For this I find that a certain amount of discipline is required.
In your view, how does Architecture & Design influence a traveller’s choice nowadays when booking a Hotel or a Villa?
MJ: It seems that the public in general has become more sensitive to design. People nowadays will book a hotel or villa based on the design. The visual impact on a website or on instagram is very strong in enticing the general public to make a booking in a hotel, and as such architecture and design have a very strong influence on the industry.
What makes Hospitality-related architecture & design different towards other projects, such us Residentials (i.e: Operational requirements)?
MJ: Foremost there is a commercial intent for most hospitality related projects. Whereas residential projects are emotionally driven, hotels, restaurants, etc. are financially driven. Depending on the size of the project, whether it be a small restaurant, or a 90 bedroom hotel, there will be different operational requirements, but these will usually be provided by the client during their design brief. These will shape the project. The larger the project and the more people are involved, the more the decision making process is differed to a group, rather than to the designer as an individual.

Why is sustainability becoming more & more important in Hospitality Design and how does you firm incorporate sustainability aspects into their projects?
MJ: We need to behave in a respectful manner, or else people will no longer be interested in our product. The damage to the environment is becoming more and more apparent, and the general public more aware about this. At Studio Jencquel we don’t make a marketing-fuss on the basis of sustainability, but we try to make our practice as responsible as possible.
